Night Lenses- Orthokeratology

What are Night Lenses or Orthokeratology?

  • Ortho?K uses custom rigid gas?permeable (RGP) lenses worn during sleep to gently flatten the central cornea.
  • This contact lens reshapes the cornea, thereby correcting refractive errors during the day.
  • Effects are temporary and require nightly wear to maintain clear vision.
  • Vision Typically improves over several nights, with full effect in 1-2 weeks.

What Ortho?K Can Correct

  • Myopia (short sightedness) Up to−6.00 D; most predictable up to −4.00 D.
  • Astigmatism: Typically up to 1.50–1.75 D depending on lens design.
  • Other uses: Myopia control.

Benefits

  • Clear daytime vision without glasses or daytime contacts.
  • Non?surgical and fully reversible.
  • Useful for active lifestyles
  • Widely used in children for myopia control, slowing eye elongation by 40–60% in studies.

Risks and Considerations

  • Main risk: eye infections, typically preventable with proper hygiene.
  • Initial discomfort from rigid lenses is common.
  • Requires consistent nightly wear and regular follow?ups.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

  • Mild to moderate myopia, low to moderate astigmatism.
  • Children with progressing myopia.
  • Adults wanting daytime freedom from glasses or contacts.
  • Not ideal for very irregular corneas (e.g., keratoconus).

Orthokeratology remains a reversible, non?surgical option for vision correction and myopia management.
