Dry Eye

Understanding Dry Eye: Causes, Symptoms & How to Manage It

Dry eye is a common condition that affects millions of people across the UK. It happens when your eyes don’t produce enough tears, or when your tears don’t keep your eyes properly lubricated. This can lead to discomfort, blurred vision, or a gritty feeling in the eyes.

What Causes Dry Eye?

Dry eye can happen for many reasons. Some of the most common include:

  • Ageing – More common in people over 50.

  • Too much screen time – Staring at computers, phones, or TVs for long periods.

  • Wearing contact lenses – Especially for long hours.

  • Dry or windy environments – Including heating and air conditioning.

  • Certain medical conditions – Like diabetes or arthritis.

  • Some medications – For example, antihistamines or antidepressants.

Common Symptoms of Dry Eye

You may have dry eye if you notice:

  • Burning, stinging, or scratchy eyes

  • A gritty feeling, like something is in your eye

  • Redness or irritation

  • Blurred or fluctuating vision

  • Watery eyes (yes – this can be a response to dryness)

  • Sensitivity to light

How to Relieve and Manage Dry Eye

Here are some helpful ways to ease your symptoms and take care of your eyes:

Use Lubricating Eye Drops

Over-the-counter artificial tears help add moisture to dry eyes. These can be used several times a day as needed, but generally they do need to be used daily.

Take Breaks from Screens

Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Adjust Your Environment

Avoid direct air from heaters or fans. Using a humidifier indoors can help keep the air moist.

Wear Protective Sunglasses

Wrap-around sunglasses can protect your eyes from wind and harsh sunlight.

Eat Omega-3 Rich Foods

Foods like salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts may help support healthy tear production.
